From Biology to Brushstrokes: Meet J.Nash

Updated: Nov 9, 2024

From Biology to Brushstrokes: Meet Jillian Nash As a child, I always felt conflicted trying to define what I wanted to accomplish in my life. When people would inquire about my future life goals, I felt torn between my greatest two loves: The consistency and structure I found in sciences which so greatly contrasted with the way my heart sung when given the opportunity to create art.

It was only through the acceptance of this duality that I was able to develop a clear choice for my life: scientific illustration. When I began at Rhode Island College in the fall of 2021, I never could've predicted the opportunities I would get to showcase my skills. It was at this time that I met my friend and mentor, Dr. Anabela Maia who took particular interest in my dreams and helped me to build them into reality.

Dr. Maia was kind enough to offer me a position in her Biomechanics research lab as an undergraduate researcher. It was through this position that I characterized the neuroanatomy of bluegills and developed concise anatomical models for grant proposals and formal presentations. Throughout my tenure as an artist, I have excelled in anatomically correct figures of fish, mammals, bivalves, and applying my anatomical knowledge to abstract concepts. I aspire to integrate my passion for the humanities into novel applications, pushing the line between what is and what can be.

When I am not found in the science lab, I can be found taking these same concepts and applying them to fantasy or comic settings. The variety of mediums and styles of my portfolio effectively illustrate my passion for the abstract whilst highlighting the small details that make my art so special.

Thank you,

Jillian Nash
